Zea Mays Printmaking Studio Featured in Art New England

I thought you might like to read an article that was just written about Zea Mays Printmaking in Art New England.  Here’s a link:  http://artnewengland.com/ed_columns/no-poisons-used-in-these-prints/

Zea Mays Printmaking is a studio, workshop, gallery, educational facility and research center dedicated to non-toxic and safer printmaking practices.

They honor the rich tradition of printmaking by exploring alternatives that are safe for artists and the environment.

Lise, Sunghee and I visited Zea Mays to study non-toxic etching techniques from director Liz Chalfin.  (you can sample these techniques for yourself in Sunghee’s Etching class)

Luxurious silk scarves, each unique, printed with a simple monoprint process.

I’ve now made oodles and oodles of them, but still I am excited to see each one come to life.   I’ve had the opportunity to teach several classes now, and I am always delighted with the new ideas and fresh, vibrant patterns that result from individual students.

Carborundum Class with Sunghee Park

January 20 & 27
$80 plus supply fee

Contact us if you are interested in learning this exciting technique!

[sthumbs=246|243|233|232,200,2,n,center,]

Carborundum is a collograph process in which the image is created on the plate by painting carborundum (an abrasive grit) mixed with an adhesive.  Once dried, the plate is inked,  wiped and printed with an etching press in the same manner as other intaglio plates. The paper will emboss from the built up surface, creating a rich velvety quality to the image.

Ruby Silvious, our new studio mate!

Ruby is a talented graphic designer, pastel artist, and printmaker.  She has studied with Sunghee at the Arts Center of the Capital District, and was looking for a studio space to expand on her printmaking work, and allow her to work on larger pieces.  I really look forward to Ruby’s sunny and positive energy to be unleashed at Ragged Edge!

Visit her website to learn more about Ruby and her work!
