Relief Printmaking Class, Saturday, November 20

Introduction to Relief Printmaking

with Terry Conrad and Rachel Ziegler-Sheridan

Saturday , November 20, 1pm-5pm
New class added Saturday, December 11, 1pm-5pm
$50 plus $12 supply fee

The tradition of artists carving blocks of wood to create prints combining text and images dates to the seventh century.

Albrecht Durer explored the technique, and elevated it to an independent art form.

Modern and contemporary artists as diverse as Henri Mattise, Pablo Picasso, Andy Warhol and Robert Indiana have all dabbled in relief printmaking.

Learn the skills to enjoy the uniqueness of printing from a wooden surface for yourself.

This class will explore basic carving and inking techniques utilizing wooden or linoleum surfaces. You will  create multiple prints,  learn  to print by hand, as well as with the use of the printing press, and develop a foundation for further explorations.  Relief printed images are well suited for posters, cards and books.

Rachel Ziegler-Sheridan and Terry Conrad are a husband and wife team that have co-taught book binding and relief printmaking. Rachel is also an Early Childhood Educator who attended Alfred University and The College of St. Rose. Terry attended Cranbrook Academy of Art and Alfred University. They believe their workshops should be a casual setting open for exploration so individual interests can be explored.

Variations: creating a chine-colle series with a lino cut

[sthumbs=148|147|146|145|144|143|142,max,7,n,center,]

Been fooling around with my moth lino cut, combining it with colored rice paper chine-colle.  This is the first time I’ve worked with a lino cut since grade school, and I feel I could probably learn a few tips in Terry’s class!.   I’ll continue to experiment,  perhaps combining the block with a monoprint.  Need to have a series of 11 finished to submit to the Print Exchange this week!

My Very First Lino Cut!

[simage=79,max,n,center,]

I don’t remember the actual making of the print, but I do remember always being fascinated with nesting dolls.  This was a grade school art project, I found the print while sorting out the basement.

Last night during Open Studio I proofed a  lino cut I did while on vacation this summer.  It really is simple and relaxing to carve the soft linoleum.   I love the pure contrast of the purple ink on the white paper, but I also just had to try printing chine-colle, using red rice paper adhered between the base paper and the print.   I love the Ragged Edges!

The inspiration for the next carving will be this set of nesting dolls my friend Tatiana brought me last year from a visit back to her home country of Russia!
